Frequently Asked Questions

The first session (60-90 min) will be about hearing where your’ve been, where you are, and where you would like to be. Together, we will create a plan that moves you forward to the healing you desire. I align more towards a free form, intuitive, and creative approach. Within that, the basic session structure (55 min) is a check in to get an idea of what you need, time of creating, and ending with processing (verbal and/or written)- prayer if desired. I encourage the creative process because, no artistic skill is necessary or specific art materials required - it is about the process of creating versus the product that is created.
The number of sessions and frequency will be personal to you.

Art therapy engages both the body and the brain, offering a gentle way to explore emotions, experiences, and patterns that may feel hard to express with words alone. When we’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected, our nervous system often needs more than talk—it needs a felt sense of safety and grounding.
Creative expression activates areas of the brain connected to emotion, memory, and sensory experience. Through color, texture, and movement, art-making can support calming the stress response and encourage regulation by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s natural “rest and restore” state.
Even simple creative processes can reduce overwhelm, increase self-awareness, and create a sense of inner connection. You don’t need to be artistic or have any prior experience—it’s to gently reconnect with yourself in a safe, embodied way.

Not at all. While my practice is rooted in Christ-centered values, I welcome women from all backgrounds and beliefs. Faith and spirituality are integrated into sessions only if it feels meaningful and supportive to you. My priority is to create a safe, respectful space where your story and healing are honored.

Not at all! Art therapy is about expression, not skill. You don’t need to be an artist — just willing to explore.

For in person sessions all materials are provided for unless you want to bring some of your favorites!
For virtual sessions, basic supplies like paper, colored pencils, markers, or paint are enough to start. I can help you figure out what works best based on your goals and what you have on hand.

Yes, I offer 75-90 minute extended sessions. Many women appreciate the extra space for:
Slowing down and arriving fully
Exploring more complex emotional layers
Engaging more deeply in the creative process
Reflecting and integrating insights without feeling rushed
Extended sessions are especially helpful if you’re working through trauma, identity issues, or significant life changes.

Choosing to pay privately instead of using insurance offers several important benefits:
Personalized Care: We’re not limited by insurance rules about session length, number of sessions, or required diagnoses. This gives us the freedom to focus entirely on what works best for you.
Confidentiality: Insurance companies often require a formal diagnosis and can request access to your treatment notes. When you pay privately, your information stays between us—confidential and secure.
Flexibility & Freedom: We can collaborate on goals that truly reflect your needs, not what an insurance plan dictates. You get to choose your therapist, your pace, and your path to healing.
Better Value: With high-deductible plans, you may already be covering most of the cost out of pocket. Private pay ensures you're getting the care you want—without added restrictions.
Private pay empowers you to take ownership of your healing journey with care that’s aligned with your values, not insurance requirements.

Many insurance plans also have out-of-network reimbursement options that cover a large part or all of your counseling fees. I am happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance. I recommend calling the number on the back of your insurance card to inquire about the process for out of network reimbursements.
Additionally, most Health Savings Account (HSA) plans will reimburse for Counseling with a Licensed Mental Health Professional regardless of being in or out of network. Be Still Art and Healing does take HSA for payment.
